Joining one of the largest and most prestigious credit unions in Connecticut is simple!
Dutch Point Credit Union History In 1960, a group of Hartford Electric Light Company (HELCO) employees founded the credit union. In October of that year, Dutch Point Credit Union received its State Charter and began operations out of a HELCO office on Pearl Street, later transferring to Sheldon Street in Hartford. Our name was derived from the Hartford Dutch Point Power Plant constructed in 1904. With the credit union’s rapid growth, it was necessary to look for a new location; and, in 1976, the credit union built its first main office and branch at 195 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield. This location was expanded in 1996, more than doubling in size. The credit union also has branch offices in Berlin, Waterford, Niantic and a satellite office in Windsor. In 2008, the credit union expanded with the opening of a full-service branch in Newington. Dutch Point began as a single-sponsor credit union; and, in 1989, our membership charter converted to include Select Employer Groups, which grew to over 200 companies. Seven credit unions -- EIS-Standard Motor Products, Inc., Hartford Knights of Columbus, Heublein/United Distillers and Vintners, Goss & DeLeeuw Machine Company, Loctite Corporation and its subsidiaries, Tech Systems, Inc., and its corporate office, and Harborview Credit Union – merged into Dutch Point Credit Union, allowing those companies’ employees to continue to enjoy credit union financial benefits. In 2004, the Connecticut State Banking Department granted Dutch Point a community charter, allowing us the ability to serve consumers in the counties of Hartford, Middlesex, New Haven and New London. Today the credit union has over 16,000 members and has assets of over $185 million. The Credit Union Difference Credit unions are not-for-profit, cooperative financial institutions, which exist to serve the financial needs of their members. When you join a credit union, you actually become an owner, participating in a unique system of mutual benefits. Members’ deposits are used to fund other members’ loans, and earnings are used to reduce loan rates and to improve service for everyone. Unlike banks, where profits are turned over to shareholders and the bottom line is money, a credit union is responsive to its members’ needs and ideas. Each member has a voice in selecting the Board of Directors, and members’ suggestions and ideas are always welcome. The credit union philosophy of “People Helping People” is evident at Dutch Point Credit Union, as we work together to help each member attain their financial goals. We look forward to serving you, your family, your co-workers and your employees. We encourage you to investigate all we have to offer. |
